Nuremberg and Kosovo.

Thanks to the unprecedented Nazi war crime trials at Nuremberg, subsequent dictators and their henchmen would be tried before an International Criminal Court.  In the 1990s, this would include Slobodan Milosevic, the former leader of Yugoslavia who was arrested and tried for crimes against humanity and genocide, in part for injustices in Kosovo.  He died, in jail, before a verdict could be reached.

This connection between Nazi Germany and the place I live, just a few years beyond Milosevic's reign, hit me like a punch to the gut.
